NGO's & Volunteers Together

This is for people who would like to contribute to society through volunteering but haven’t found yet the right cause to support.

At this kind of event potential volunteers are brought together with representatives of NGO's that share what they do and more importantly share what kind of volunteering they need.

This often helps the people to realize that there are many different ways they can help and that almost anyone can help in his own way.

1st edition was on
24-02-2016

and was called "Give 180 min to Society"

Background:

In November 2015 several people within my network and myself included, felt that we want to do something to contribute to changing the society.
And like any other change, this change has to come from within. Within the people, within You  And Me.
At that time several initiatives were born and then people decided to team-up to boost the impact of their involvement.
This is why I decided to join the 180m.ro platform and link several activities to it.
180m.ro is about giving/sharing 180min (3 hours) per week to help someone or a cause. I know, it sounds like yet another contribution, next to the many existing already out there. Bear with me and you’ll see and feel the difference.

A Great First Step!

That Wednesday evening founders and representatives of existing charities met with potential volunteers.

People who would like to contribute to society through volunteering but haven’t found yet the right cause to support joined in Connect Hub to be introduced to different charities and NGO’s.
The latter ones are in need of motivated volunteers.

Lotfi was the organizer and the moderator of the event. He contacted the different associations and invited them to join this new initiative. He also promoted the event via Facebook and his newsletter. With both the organizing and the promotion Lotfi got help from many enthusiastic people who believed in him and his vision/idea. This resulted in a beautiful mix of attendees and associations.

After an introduction by Lotfi every association got the time to present itself and answer questions from the attendees.
In several cases this turned into interesting conversations with good suggestions and ideas.
Read below the feedback of representatives of associations and of attendees.

It is worth mentioning that we had one attendee, Alexandru Penes, who brought multiple boxes with books for kids under the age of 10. This was welcomed by Caritas.

At the end
Corina Bega, who supported Lotfi a lot and translated when he needed it, shared her belief that we will most benefit from our endeavor to contribute to the society if we will be mindful of our own objectives in life. Contributing to the betterment of others is a mean for each of us to grow and fulfill our purpose. We each have an area where we can benefit of more awareness and presence, be it financial independence, good health, harmonious relationships, peace of mind or contributing more to the lives of others. By simply acknowledging the area in our life where we most want to improve and grow, we will not simply spend some hours of our time in doing something for a good cause, we will rather invest our time by putting our energy and focus into growing others and ourselves at the same time.  That is the benefit of having a clear intention while investing our attention and our time in supporting a cause.

Feedback of the attendees:

It was a small but very authentic event. The quality of the people who attended the event defined it as an open interaction between two essential parts of the society: those who need help and those who can and want to help. A few words about the event: warm, open atmosphere, genuine interest in helping, lots of ideas, good energy, beautiful people connecting the dots and making a big difference. I am honored to be part of it.

180m was a very useful experience for me.
Being in a room with different NGOs presenting themselves and their needs, helped me understand very quickly which is the cause I related most to and how I can get involved and contribute. And that I can actually do it very easily!
Lotfi, you and your guests were great and thanks a lot for your initiative!
Georgiana Sarbu

I went to this event out of curiosity and thinking that I will not have too much time to get involved, yet with the desire to contribute as little. I met wonderful people there, not only they contribute in society, but some even devote their lives to helping others, and that impressed me. It drew my attention in particular NGO "Unu si unu", and I realized that I can help more than I thought. I'm glad I attended this event where I learned another important life lesson.
Anca Fota

Feedback of the charities:

Am simtit empatie in ochii participantilor si dorinta de a se implica ulterior, ceea ce m-a bucurat. Daca fiecare dintre noi ne-am rezerva 180 de minute
pe saptamana pentru a da din binele nostru celor care au nevoie, s-ar schimba mult dinamica societatii, si am intalni mai putina durere in jurul nostru.
Speech-ul tinut de Corina Bega a fost revelator, mi-a confirmat ca munca e ONG-ist este acea munca care iti aduce multa implinire!

For me, Wednesday was a real pleasure since it is not very often that NGOs have this wonderful opportunity to speak about their projects and their needs directly with individuals who want to get involved.

Lotfi created a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for everyone involved. I really look forward to the next event.

It was really a pleasure and  a great opportunity to be near other people who, just like me, are trying to make a difference in our society. I’ve seen different experiences about fundraising strategies, about making the society getting involved and sensitive to what Ngo’s are fighting for.
For me, it was a very motivating meeting, getting contacts, tell your story and try to search people who can help you, even if we are not talking about money.
I look forward to the second event in april. I hope I will come with news about how the people I’ve met there helped us.

The "180 minutes for Society" Event was a unique event in Romania, bringing together charities and people who want to be involved in social projects.
It's a great initiative and i hope that it will be repeated, because in this way we can all work together for improving from a social perspective the society, motivating people to get involved in any initiative.
Only together we can change things and make a difference.
